If it is a fairly large room, you may want to consider including other pieces of furniture such as screens, sideboards or china cabinets. If you want to downplay the size you may also want to use heavy drapes or large rugs. Wider, bigger or upholstered chairs or chairs with arms may be used. Before you begin furnishing your dining room, determine how you would normally use it. Will it be used every day, or only once in a while to entertain?
In any dining space, the table is the most important element. For a formal look, you can't go wrong with traditional-style furniture. Its intricate elements like reeding, cabriole legs and veneer inlays make for an elegant, upscale look. If formal dinners with fine china aren't your thing, then reinvent this space with a statement-making dining set. Instead of ornate embellishments, opt for clean lines and/or casual finishes that are true to your personal style. Even if you don't own fine dishware, don't discount the value of a china cabinet. It gives you space to show off your favorite finds—and honestly, you can never have too much storage.
