We all know that a dining room needs a table and chairs. But what kind of a table and which chairs? What else might be needed in your dining room? A china cabinet? Sideboards? Serving carts? Or some other kind of storage, because your dining room also doubles as your home-office? How big is your dining room? Do you have a large space at your disposal? A cavernous room with a small table will look cold and empty, while a too small space with a large table and chairs will seem unpleasantly crowded. Always measure your room before buying furniture, and remember to leave enough room around your furniture to move around easily.
A limited color palette may be a good place to start. It is easier to work with a lighter or neutral color palette as it can make your room look airier. Contrasting or complementary colors should only be used as accents. Read about The Case for Neutral Colors to see how neutrals can help. But then, while this is the safe approach, you might end up with a safe space that lacks excitement. If you are looking for a more adventurous look, then, by all means, go all out for a bold color scheme. That could work just as well. The simple trick, in either case, is not to get too fussy and keep to the fewest colors possible.
